What’s in a name?
The word 'Jubilee' may have all kinds of connotations for you, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee for example, but the original meaning is quite different to how it is used today.
In the Old Testament, God decreed a year of rest for the Hebrew people every 50 years. This was announced by the blowing of the trumpets and people would return to their own land and families, and allow the land to rest for a year, to celebrate all that God had done for them. The poor were cared for especially and those who had lost their property due to debt had it returned to them.
jubilee n. 1. a time or season for rejoicing. 2. a special anniversary, esp. 25th or 50th. 3. Old Testament. a year that was to be observed every 50th year, during which Hebrew slaves were to be liberated. 4. a less common word for jubilation.
jubilation n. 1. the act of rejoicing.
